“Die Eiland Huis” was founded in 2005. The founder, mr Jimmy Duncan’s daughter is disabled. From experience he knew that many parents of disabled children are often drained and exhausted. There are also emotions of guilt present with parents when they want to go on leave or vacation and leave their child in a facility. They would end up phoning the facility a dozen times a day resulting in their not having a proper rest because of concern and culpability. Seeing this need “Die Eiland Huis” was established.
We are a High Care Facility, situated on the beachfront in St Helena Bay in the Western Cape. Day care, permanent care, holiday care as well as relieve care are provided - focusing specifically on bed-ridden and wheelchair-bound children. A myriad of activities are done with patients. Physiotherapy, drawing, building puzzles, story time, watching movies etc. 24 Hour care and loads of fresh air and attention ensure an environment in which patients can thrive.
Attached to the facility are several fully equipped, self catering cottages which are rented to parents / visitors / the public.
The facility is not subsidized – therefore receives no financial assistance from government. It is, however, registered as NPO and PBO and is registered which makes it accountable to; inter alia, the Department of Health.
NPO 037-220, PBO 930024147
All funding is obtained through parents, self generated or by means of donations. As we are registered Tax Deductible Certificates can be issued to donators, enabling them to claim back donations – please contact us as we need specific info in order to issue the certificate. (All applicable info on last page)
As we are a high care facility, these disabilities are very severe and both mental as well as physical. Of the eight residents only one is semi-mobile – the others are all wheelchair bound. Only one can eat by herself – the others must be fed. Only two can eat solid foods all others must be pureed.
You are furthermore invited to visit us at any time in order to acquaint yourself with our facility. It is preferable that telephonic appointments are made if you wish to speak to the owners themselves to ensure their presence and / or wish to meet the children as they have set mealtimes, afternoon naps and wash / bath time. Please do not feel that you have to bring “stuff” or money when visiting us – just bring an hour of your time and spend it with our kids.
