Vredenburg is situated about 130km North of Cape Town.
Centrally situated between the coastal towns of Veldrif,
St Helena Bay, Saldanha, Langebaan and Paternoster,
it is the business and administative hub of the South African West Coast.
Here visitors will find all essential services including banks, hospitals,
shopping facilities and many more.Around May / June of each year, the
surrounding hills and fields change almost overnight from a dry landscape to
green wheatfields. Within months daisies and other wild flowers start appearing,
offering an amazing display of color and beauty.
Just outside Vredenburg is a rock called Witteklip.
Years ago a cave-like opening in the rocks was a source of fresh water and shelter. Rain water would
run into it and provide fresh water for sailors finding shelter in Saldanha Bay.

Hier word alle noodsaaklike dienste verskaf insluitende banke, hospitale,

History of Vredenburg
|
Originally known as "Die Agterbaai", Vredenburg has been known as a grain producing area since the
1740. During the late 1700's, fishermen had also settled in the area and supplied dried, salted fish to
the local farmers. Fresh water was a major problem, as it was everywhere on the West Coast.
Constant arguing over water, led to the town being named Twisfontein and later Prosesfontein. In those days
the nearest church was at Hopefield, 6 hours' travel by horse from Vredenburg. As late as the mid 1930's, the road
between Vredenburg and Hopefield was very poor and, in winter, sometimes almost inaccessable. In 1875 it
was decided that a congregation would be started and the town was renamed Vredenburg. The church was officially
opened here on 10 October 1875.
Although a goverment school was built in 1880, the town still developed slowly, mostly due to the lack of
fresh water. After the Second World War a water pipeline was constructed and the area experienced a boom
in the fishing as well as agricultural industries. Fishing villages such as Stompneus Bay, Slippers Bay, Viool and St Helena Bay
sprang up and Vredenburg became the commercial and educational centre. When the municipalities of Vredenburg and Saldanha
amalgamated in 1975, it became the largest municipal area in South Africa.
Although industrial development did not take place to the scale that was predicted in the early 1970's, it is slowly starting to become
a more industrialised area.

Geskiedenis van Vredenburg
|
Alhoewel dit oorspronklik as "Die Agterbaai" bekend gestaan het, was dit reeds vanaf 1740 bekend as 'n landbou
streek waar koring verbou was.
So onlangs nog as die
