History of Brittania Bay

Artifacts from the BrittaniaBritannia Bay was named after an British ship named Britannia that struck the notorious Britannia Reef, which lies about 3 miles west of the present day Britannia Bay, on the 22 October 1826. The stricken vessel was safely beached in Britannia Bay, on the stretch of beautiful beach called the Golden Mile. A local farmer, Martin Melck, purchased the wreck, from which he salvaged a considerable quantity of cargo, including sheet copper and wines.

The wreck was subsequently rediscovered in January 1998 and artifacts recovered from the wreck, under supervision of the National Monuments, range from full bottles of wine and ale, to valuable porcelain crockery and lead crystal glassware.

A second shipwreck, that of the cargo ship the Sea Trader, which ran aground off Cape St Martin in 1976, the most western point of Britannia Bay, has been comprehensively salvaged and only the engine block is visible at low-tide.

Development of Britannia Bay began in the late seventies.
